Licensed professionals can't form an ordinary LLC in New York. We set up more professional entities than anyone in the state, and we know exactly what gets an application rejected.
EXPECT THIS TO TAKE A WHILE
Before a professional entity can be formed, the New York State Education Department has to approve it. That preapproval adds roughly two to three months, and there is no way around it — it is the state's process, not ours.
Anyone promising to skip it is selling you something they can't deliver. Start earlier rather than later.
WHY SOME APPLICATIONS GET REJECTED
Small errors in the preapproval request — particularly around the entity name — can add several more months to an already long wait. After hundreds of these, we know which names clear and which ones come back.
THE NATIONAL SERVICES DON'T DO THESE
LegalZoom and the other out-of-state names don't handle New York professional entities. The NYSED step is too specific to this state for a fifty-state operation to bother with.
